What Hawaya is
Hawaya began life in Egypt as Harmonica, an app built by a local team who wanted a serious, marriage-minded alternative to Western dating apps for Arab Muslims. It was later acquired by Match Group and relaunched as Hawaya, keeping its core positioning: modest by default, marriage-oriented, with photo privacy options and a strong emphasis on intention rather than casual dating.
Its centre of gravity is Egypt and the wider Middle East and North Africa, with Arabic language support and cultural norms tuned to that region. If you are Arab, or specifically want to meet Arabic-speaking Muslims, Hawaya is a credible and well-built option.
Why a British Bengali family needs something else
The member pool is in the wrong place. A match in Cairo, Riyadh or Casablanca is a serious undertaking for a family in Oldham or Tower Hamlets: visas, relocation, two sets of relatives who cannot meet before nikah. Most British Bengali families want a spouse in Britain.
Language and culture. Hawaya's Arabic-first design suits its audience, but a Sylheti-speaking family will not find dialect, Bangladeshi district or the specifics of a Bengali walima reflected anywhere in it.
App-style matching. Like most apps in the category it leans on photo-led matching and mutual interest before contact. Raibar keeps the older matrimonial shape, where the full profile is read first and any member can be contacted directly.
Paid tiers. Hawaya is free to start with paid upgrades, as is normal for Match Group products. Check their app for current pricing. Raibar has no tiers to compare against, which is the point.
Raibar and Hawaya compared
Geography. Raibar: the UK only. Hawaya: strongest across MENA and among Arab diaspora communities.
Language and community. Raibar: British English, Bengali heritage, dialect and district fields. Hawaya: Arabic-first with regional cultural design.
Contact model. Raibar: message any visible member directly, free. Hawaya: app-style matching flow with paid upgrades available.
Family involvement. Raibar: profiles can be created and held by a parent, sibling or wali, with attribution shown, plus Mahram contact approval.
Verification. Raibar: live in-browser selfie with photo ID and manual admin review before a profile goes live.
Ongoing contact. Raibar: optional WhatsApp number so families can continue outside the platform when ready.
Everything that costs nothing on Raibar
Creating a profile with photos, browsing every visible member, all filters including dialect, district, city, madhab and practice level, favourites and shortlists, unlimited messaging, WhatsApp contact, verification, blurred private photos with per-member approval, blocking, and the installable home screen app with push notifications.
Modesty settings that match British Bengali expectations
Hawaya earned goodwill for taking modesty seriously, and Raibar takes the same view with tools shaped to a British Bengali context. Individual photos can be blurred and released only to members you personally approve. Male profiles must include a photo before they become visible, so sisters are not asked to show a face to an anonymous account. Mahram details stay hidden until you release them, and blocking is enforced at database level so a blocked member cannot message you by any route.
Every new profile also passes a human admin review before it appears in search, which is unusual at any scale and only practical because Raibar is deliberately focused on one community.
When Hawaya is the better choice
If you are Arab, want an Arabic-speaking spouse, live in the region or are genuinely open to marrying abroad, Hawaya is the right tool and Raibar is not. Raibar makes sense when your search is British, Bengali, family-led and you want contact to be free.
Getting started
Add a photo, choose a nickname, select your gender, enter your date of birth, town or city and WhatsApp number, then create your account with email or Google. Admin review is usually done within 24 hours, then you can browse and message. Everything else, dialect, district, madhab, prayer frequency, education, occupation and Mahram details, can be added later.
